Dr. Robert F. McCauley, Sr., was born and raised in the southwestern United States , Texas and New Mexico .  Dr. McCauley served in W.W.II as a Lieutenant Colonel in North Africa and Central Asia . He received his masters' degree from Michigan State University in 1951 and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1953 for the study of removing radioactive strontium from water. He earned his doctorate in Environmental Engineering in less than 2 years, one of the shortest doctoral studies in the history from MIT. He taught civil, sanitary and environmental engineering at Michigan State University for 20 years before retiring to run Wolverine Engineers & Surveyors of Mason Michigan for 17 years. With his partner they transformed the company into one of most respected and well known engineering firms in mid-Michigan. Dr. McCauley is credited with the invention and development of calcite coating for water main pipes which keep them from rusting. In 1992, he started Spartan Water Company, which provides vended water in supermarkets and was the precursor to Spartan Enterprises and The Watershed Wellness Center.
